How does pregnancy affect skin?

Your body undergoes many changes when you're pregnant, and your skin is no exception. Melasma, acne, varicose veins and stretch marks are the most common skin problems in pregnancy.

Melasma

Melasma is also called the mask of pregnancy. The pigmented patches of Melasma are tan to brown in colour and can appear around the eyes, on the cheeks, chin, forehead, temples, above the lip and other parts of the body.

There are several possible causes of Melasma, and in pregnancy it is thought that increased levels of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone stimulate excessive production of melanin in response to exposure to sunlight.

Other factors that may influence Melasma include dietary deficiencies in protein, Vitamin B12 and Iron. High stress levels may also trigger excess melanin production.

What you can do to prevent melasma

  • Your skin is more likely to develop dark pigment when exposed to sunlight. Make sure you apply sunscreen regularly and liberally.
  • To start your pregnancy skin care regime, choose a product like our Age Defy+ Brightening Moisturiser which actively works to reduce skin pigmentation with key natural actives such as White Mulberry and Cucumber Seed
  • It is vital to keep your liver and digestion happy to ensure proper absorption of vitamins and minerals
  • Ensure you are not lacking in protein, Vitamin B12 and iron
  • And remember to de-stress! Get your partner to give you a neck and shoulder massage on a regular basis, relax several times during the day, listen to soothing music and go early to bed
